Building Permits:
Do I need a permit to construct something new on my property or modify existing structures?
Yes – Permits are available at Unicoi Town Hall.
There is no permit fee.
May I build a garage?
Yes – As long as you comply with setback requirements.
Always check with Town Hall (743-7162) to be sure
your plans are in compliance for your particular zone.
You must obtain a building permit from Unicoi Town
Hall.
Burning Permits:
Do I need a burn permit to burn brush on my property?
Yes – The Tennessee State Forest Service requires that you obtain a burn permit for any burning between October 15th and May 15th. You may obtain a permit number by calling the State Forest Service in Jonesborough at 423-753-4011.
Dogs:
Must dogs be kept on leashes, if not enclosed in a fence area?
Yes – Residents of the State of Tennessee are not permitted to allow their dogs to run at large. Pets must be contained on the owner’s property and must be controlled by their owners.
Subdivision of Property:
May I subdivide my land?
Yes – But first you will need subdivision approval from the Town of Unicoi Planning Commission which meets at 5:30 p.m., every 2nd Monday of each month at Town Hall.

State and local subdivision regulations and to arrange to
meet with the commission.
Road Maintenance:
To whom do I report a pot hole? Who do I contact to request other road maintenance?
Contact the City Recorder at Unicoi Town Hall. The Town of Unicoi employs a Grounds Maintenance worker for minor street maintenance and clean-up.
All major road projects are contracted with the Unicoi County Roads Department. However all work requests must be routed through the Unicoi Town Recorder’s office, who will relay that work request to the county for appropriate action.
Town Services:
What public services are available at Town Hall?
The public may have free use of the Town Hall’s copy and fax services for personal documents – within reasonable expectations.
The master zoning map and a master street map for the Town of Unicoi are available for public inspection at the Town Hall.
The Unicoi City Recorder also provides the services of a Notary Public.
The Town of Unicoi welcomes all citizen comments and suggestions.
Town Meetings:
May I attend meetings of the Town of Unicoi?
Absolutely – All meetings are open to the public and citizens are encouraged to attend, share their opinions and share discussion. Any citizen who is interested in serving the community by being a member of a commission or board, or volunteering for Town activities, functions, and public programs (i.e. Meals-On-Wheels, etc.), should call the Unicoi Town Hall (743-7162).

The Town of Unicoi Board of Mayor and Aldermen meet at 5:30 pm every 3rd Monday of each month at Unicoi Town Hall, located at 3600 Unicoi Drive.
The Town of Unicoi Planning Commission and the Town of Unicoi Board of Zoning Appeals meet consecutively, beginning at 5:30 pm at Unicoi Town Hall every 2nd Monday of each month.
